Réka Deák

I studied stage design for alternative and puppet theatre at the Academy of Performing Arts (DAMU) - Prague - (CZ), with Robert Smolik.

 

I made my first puppet as an undergraduate student at University of Arts - Tirgu Mures (RO). After I created the little naive marionettes for my solo show (Dad a dada). One of the most important aspects of my work is the experience; to find something new and personal. Here I've tried to combine marionette with table-top puppets and poi.

 

In the coproduction with the  Bodor Péter Cultural Association, the goal was to explore the imaginary level of a realistic play (Free people). That's, for example, why one of the characters has wings.
 

I like the process of making the puppets for Ugly duck performance. It was special because I've tried to combine musical instruments with puppets. You can find traditional, rhythmical and experimental instruments. I thought that I should make the puppets look like animals in realistic way; but now I have doubts ...
 

In 2013, with Macadi Nahhas(JO) and Husam Abed (JO) we created a bigger production. Jowa Alahlam basically is a musical play and I  used many visual effects and various types of puppets (bunraku, marrionette, 2D) to make exciting, action design.

 

2014 was one of the richest year. I did stage and puppet design for The Smooth Life, which has a great carier. After that experience, I had the chance to work in traditional theater with Sawsan Darwaza, an amazing college and director from Jordan. The show (As we forgive) gave the possibility for me to work on bigger scale.

 

In the  late of 2014, I became member founder of the Flying Freedom Festival, an international artistists collective, where I realized 3 puppets for the show titled The story of Gilgamesh.

 

In 2015, I started working on my second solo show Theseus with hand puppets designed and realized by myself. 

 

Refugee Safari is the latest show from 2016. It is a progressive house musical. Presented by: Father and Son Mainstream, Dafa Puppet Theater, Babu Association, Naprawski and Bataljonen. Great creative team!
